Preserve Our Most Precious Resource

Water Conservation

Conserving our most precious resource is everybody's responsibility.  To help you do your part, please become familiar with our City Ordinance on Water Conservation

Summary of Hastings Watering Restrictions

  • Effective Dates: May 15th to September 1st

  • Day of Month Restrictions: Properties with odd-numbered addresses are allowed to water on odd-numbered days, and properties with even-numbered addresses are allowed to water on even-numbered days. For example, if your house number is 802, you are permitted to water on June 4th but not on June 5th.

  • Time of Day Restrictions: Additionally, during the odd/even days when properties are permitted to water lawns,  watering is prohibited between the hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Exemptions: A 2-week exemption from the odd/even sprinkling ban may be granted for newly planted sod, grass or landscaping. Other exemptions may be granted upon evaluation and recommendation of the Hastings Utility Superintendent.

Irrigation is the largest demand on our water system - You can make a difference!

  • Of the City’s SIX water-supply wells, we only need between two and three to provide water to our 23,000 residents and businesses. The other three are only necessary to help us meet the demands of irrigation.
  • Lawns need only about ONE inch of water per week to remain green and sustained. Pay attention to the weather and consider installing a smart irrigation system controller with a rain sensor. There is no need to water every other day!

Additionally, during times of moderate, severe, and extreme drought, the City may enact enhanced restrictions and/or prohibitions for non-essential uses of water.  Please see below for any current special restrictions.

Violators of the City's ordinances and any special declarations are subject to receive a citation and fine.
