The City Council, in collaboration with the City's senior management team, engages in strategic planning initiatives. In 2021, the Council approved a set of strategic priorities of focus through 2023.

In 2023, staff and council worked on a three-year strategic plan. The City Council approved the 2024-2027 Strategic Plan for the City of Hastings Government at its September 5 City Council meeting. The plan focuses on five strategic priorities: financial resilience, operational effectiveness, responsive community development, infrastructure sustainability and strategic communication.
