EROSION & SEDIMENT CONTROL
The City of Hastings requires property owners to maintain and control all disturbed soil until turf can be established. Silt fence, silt socks, straw mulch, rock construction entrances are example best management practices (BMPs) available to help reduce and eliminate illicit runoff.
For residential home and commercial building construction, an erosion control plan is required to be submitted and approved prior to the issuance of a building permit. The erosion control plan must comply with the City’s Public Works Design Manual, Section 3, and the City’s Builders Handbook.
Upon approval of the permit, the permit holder is responsible for keeping all disturbed soil on site. A representative of the City will periodically inspect the silt fence and other erosion control measures on a weekly basis, or as needed. Inspections will also occur after each significant rainfall event.
If the erosion control is not being maintained properly, the City representative will contact the permit holder to ensure immediate compliance with their erosion control requirements. Failure to install and maintain the erosion control is a violation of City Code. Non complying permit holders may be subject to withholding of future building inspections, issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy, and/or charged a per hour street sweeping fee and/or other cleanup and maintenance fees.
