PFAs have been in the water supply for years. Why does Hastings need to treat its water now?
Due to more recent epidemiology and recognition of the effects of PFAS on human health, in 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency lowered the maximum contaminant levels for PFAS “forever chemicals.” Cities like Hastings with PFAS levels now above the new limits are required to remove the chemicals from the water supply within five years.
